Jasper is the county seat of Walker County and is located in northwestern Alabama. Approximately 15,000 residents call Jasper home, which was once one of the world’s largest coal-producing towns. The city occupies 26.9 square miles, of which 0.04% is water.

A Brief History

The area now known as Jasper was first established as a trading post in the 1800s by Lorenzo Dow. Shortly thereafter, a Dr. Gordon Musgrove donated his land for the town settlement, keeping only a portion of it for his own log cabin, which also served as the courthouse, school, and church. A man named Hugh Lollar named the town Jasper after famed Revolutionary War hero Sergeant William Jasper. In 1886, the Kansas City-Memphis & Birmingham and the Sheffield & Birmingham Railroads expanded into the area and the town was officially incorporated the next year. Within four years of the railroad expansion, the town population exploded from 200 to over 3,000. The city’s location in the second-largest coal field in the nation spurred its growth throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
